About Robin Thornton

Welcome! My name is Robin Thornton.  I am a professional multi-instrumentalist with a specialism in person-centred music lessons.  I teach Singing, Piano, Guitar, Bass, Drums and Composition.

I started teaching in Banchory, in 1993 as part of a school´s initiative where older school children would gain teaching experience, teaching younger children.  I realised that I had a forte for teaching and pursued my passion through a diploma, degree and on to a masters.  I opened my first teaching studio in Kincardine O´Neil and served a catchment area ranging from Ballater and Aboyne through Banchory and on to Stonehaven.  I employed members of staff to support my teaching.  I made the decision to downsize the business as I was spending more time managing staff, rather than teaching and teaching is my focus.

Music lessons are available online or in my fully equipped teaching studio in Banchory, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  If you live locally, or are visiting, why not book a lesson? If you live anywhere else in the world, why not book online lessons. I have taught throughout the UK, France, Russia, the UAE and Australia via online lessons.

I teach classically, although not necessarily "Classical".  High quality understanding of music is taught through the genres of Classical, Rock and Pop, Jazz and Country.  All styles and abilities are welcome. Grades are available on the student's request. Syllabuses from Rockschool, ABRSM, LCM, Trinity and RGT are available.  Formal qualifications have their benefits.  When the student doesn't want exams, we measure success by the growth of musical skills.

My philosophy of teaching asks, "Was I taught that and could I listen?"  I specialise in personality based teaching, I acknowledge my teaching preference and understand the learning preference of each student.  Each individual is encouraged to learn about music and learn how they learn.  This takes the enjoyment of the music classroom  and promotes value in the  wider world.
