At first glance, my logo looks like a treble clef. I teach guitar, which reads from the treble clef. I am also a piano teacher. The piano reads from both the treble and bass clefs, which is why you will see the bass clef forming he mid-section of the logo. As a drumming instructor, I did consi...

I teach music classically, although not necessarily "Classical".

I have said that I teach classically, although not necessarily "classical" since I started teaching, in 1993, but I was reminded of it, recently. A student asked to play a pop song. The notes were not very difficult. If I had wr...

With restrictions easing, I have started teaching students in my teaching studio in Banchory. I started giving online lessons in 2010, so Covid didn't change my approach as a music teacher. Students who were reluctant to try online lessons, before the outbreak, were put in a position of trying ...

Seems like a good day to explain this musical concept. Music is like Maths, in reverse. Letters are converted to numbers, so that things equate. Play A+D. Sounds nice? Play other notes 4 apart. Equates? May the 4th be with you

Lessons are for learning. Performances are for performing. Let yourself learn.

Students of the Performing Arts think that lessons are about getting it right. I teach my students how to learn, freeing them to learn in other areas of their lives.

The word music means, "coming from the muses". Studying music develops skills in communicating what we say, the sound and non-verbal messages we give.

I started lessons with Robin after a life long belief that I couldn't sing (I'm 36)! I could never have anticipated then how much progress was possible, not just in my singing but also much more widely in my communication skills in day to day life - in presenting at work, parenting, and personal life. I have really grown in confidence in how I express myself and get a lot more enjoyment in doing so. Robin takes a unique approach to teaching which I thoroughly enjoy. His passion and professionalism really come across. He creates an atmosphere that is both comfortable and encouraging. He seems to have a good gauge of the appropriate level of challenge and be able to adapt his style of teaching to bring out the best in his pupils. The depth of learning I have taken from my lessons so far has not only been really interesting, but has also inspired a love of music and creativity that I never knew I had! Thanks Robin!

Robin knows music very well, but perhaps more importantly he cares about how students learn effectively. Three of us in the family (me and two children) have spent the last two years learning with Robin and have each found it an enormously rewarding experience. He adjusts his approach for every learner and "goes with the grain". I have especially enjoyed the broad approach to music Robin has taken with us, covering theory, musicology, composition, performance and technique. If you want someone who'll do more than rattle a student through their grades and will instead help students develop an understanding and appreciation of all that music has to offer I would recommend Robin as a teacher.

I've been taking guitar lesson with Robin since February and in that time I feel like I've learned a lot, not just about music but also the mechanics of playing the instrument and creating different textures of sound. What I really appreciate is how Robin's lessons are totally student-focused - he starts with what you're working on and develops the lesson around it, so I feel like I'm learning at my own pace and in directions that are really interesting to me, instead of just wading through a book. Robin's passionate and knowledgeable about music and a friendly, encouraging teacher; I feel like my confidence grown a lot with guitar and I'm really motivated to keep learning.

Singing|Piano|Guitar|Drumming Lessons

I have been teaching since 1993.  I that time, I have been providing lessons in singing, piano, guitar, bass, drums, theory and composition to students of all ages and abilities.

As a professional musician, I have extensive experience in performance in a variety of contexts such as solo, ensemble, ceilidh and rock concerts.

Lessons are available online or at my Teaching Studio in Banchory, Aberdeenshire, Scotland.  Location based lessons have drawn students from Aberdeen, Banchory, Aboyne, Stonehaven, Strathdon and Portlethan.  Via online lessons, I have taught students from north Scotland to the south of England, France, the middle east, Russia and Australia.

Teaching Background

I am a music teacher who focuses on meeting the learning needs of the individual while developing the student in music theory and/or practice. While studying for my Teaching Diploma, I developed an interest in the Psychology of Learning and this informs my teaching practice. After graduating, with Distinction, I undertook an undergraduate degree in Music (BMus) at the University of Aberdeen. On graduating with a 2:1, I progressed to Masters level by studying for an MMus in Composition under Dr. Phillip Cooke.

Teaching Style

My academic interest in the education field is in the student-teacher interaction and my teaching approach is designed around student-centred learning. This means that the student benefits from lessons that are tailored according to their preferred learning styles.

With a breadth of knowledge and experience ranging from Classical (Reading) through to Jazz (Improvisation) and Composition, I will develop your skills, in a way that suits your learning preference. I teach in a classical style but this does not mean that you have to study classical music!
